Sam Gaze, a 22 year old mountain biker from New Zealand, became the first Kiwi to win an UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Title at the opening round of the competition held in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This was an intense race between Sam Gaze and Nino Schurter from Switzerland who was a world champion. The UCI XCO World Cup 2018 RD1 Men’s Results with Sam Gaze placing first in 1h 30m 14s, second place Nino Schurter with 1h 30m 15s and Maxime Marotte placing third with 1h 30m 16s time.
“It’s a dream come true..We live our lives through these guys and look up to them as young riders. I watched London 2012, and Jaroslav and Nino racing there. You always dream you can do it. You always go to sleep wishing you can do it. And to do it, is incredible.”, Gaze said.
Gaze’s reaction was just priceless when you take a look at 0:33.
“Winning that sprint, was just a moment of disbelief. I was starting to cramp with a lap and a half to go. I was just pushing my way through. As we got closer and closer to the finish I knew I had to be in front. I went for it as we came over the bridge and it came off. I was never sure, but it is just amazing.”
Truly Gaze is an inspiration to all mountain bikers out there!
